A teenage boy is under arrest after police say he was caught on camera molesting a 5-year-old girl at a daycare where he worked.

The teen was part of a paid summer internship program at the Tender Care Early Learning Center in Newport. Neighbors and parents were disgusted when they learned the 17-year-old boy was charged with child molestation.

According to police, a 5-year-old girl came home Tuesday and complained to her mother that her privates hurt. The mother took to the child to the Newport Police Department and then to Hasbro Children's Hospital. The teenager was arrested and charged with a felony. Police say he was caught on surveillance video putting his hands down the little girl's shorts.

However, the daycare had yet to put out a notice to parents more than 24 hours after the incident.

“It's an allegation,” daycare owner Greg Johnson said. “Nothing has been proven yet. Legally we cannot send out a notice saying something that happened between two minors.”

Johnson says he can only tell parents an incident occurred and that their children are safe. He says the daycare does not perform background checks on minors.

The teen was sent to a juvenile detention facility. Newport Police and DCYF are investigating.
