WARWICK – As part of the runway expansion at T.F. Green Airport, a new ball field is going up to replace Winslow Park in Warwick.

T.F. Green Airport is taking over the land to extend the length of its south runway. The park is in the runway protection zone, so the airport is relocating it to the end of Lake Shore Road thanks to a $6 million grant, according to an airport spokesperson.

Pamela Palermo has lived across from Winslow Park for more than 20 years, and she told ABC6 this was not what she bargained for. “I moved on a side road. I didn’t sign up for a main road and the airport to move closer to me,” she explained.

T.F. Green said the driving roads in that area are being shifted south to make room for the runway and the airport has purchased certain homes for acquisition per the Federal Aviation Administration’s instructions. But Palermo wants the airport to reconsider buying houses that she described as “on the front lines.”

Construction on the new park is about 40 percent complete and the field is expected to be open for public use in June 2015, according to airport officials.

T.F. Green encourages anyone with concerns to call its construction hotline at 401-691-2707. Folks can also email construction@pvdairport.com, or check out updates on construction on PVDAirport.com.

Airport officials are organizing public outreach and informational meetings. Those dates have not been scheduled yet.
