The oldest Portuguese Catholic Parish in North America will close it’s doors

The oldest Portuguese church in North America is right here in Southern New England,

but soon that church will become a footnote to history,

Saint John the Baptist parish – created in 1871,will soon be forced to close it's doors because of a dwindling congregation and the building is falling apart.

Most parishioners were saddened by the news from Fall River Diocese.George Lidino has spent most of his life at this church, 86 years ,he says “I've been here so long it's been another home for me,I wish we could have done something to keep the church going.”

When the church does shut it's doors, the congregation will merge with our lady of Mount carmel on Bonney street.Church officials say they'll form a committee to determine when the church will actually close.
