The Pats Select Cal’s Shane Vereen to Bolster Their Backfield.

Patriots take RB Vereen with 56th overall pick

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – The New England Patriots have drafted
running back Shane Vereen of California with their second pick of
the second round.
Vereen was taken with the 56th choice overall. The Patriots
drafted cornerback Ras-I Dowling of Virginia with the first pick of
the second round. They also had the 60th selection overall.
At 5-feet-10 and 205 pounds, Vereen lacks the size typical of
backs who play every down. As a junior last year, he rushed for
1,167 yards and 13 touchdowns on 231 carries, averaging 5.1 yards
per run. Vereen may emerge as an eventual replacement for veteran
third-down back Kevin Faulk, who spent most of last season on
injured reserve.
