PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The story of one of Rhode Island’s most infamous politicians will kick off the upcoming season at a historic Providence theater.

Trinity Repertory Company announced Tuesday that “The Prince of Providence”, a stage adaptation of a book based on the life of former Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci Jr, will premiere as the first show of their 2019-2020 season.

The historic Providence theater revealed in 2018 that they had commissioned playwright George Brant to adapt Mike Stanton’s book , “The Prince of Providence: The Life and Times of Buddy Cianci, America’s Most Notorious Mayor, Some Wiseguys, and the Feds”, for the stage.

Trinity Rep obtained the rights to the book from Stanton and commissioned Brant to transform the story into a stage production to be performed in an upcoming season.

Stanton’s book, first released in 2004, looks at the life and notorious political journey of Cianci, the two-term Providence mayor whose allegations of corruption led to scandals and multiple federal investigations.

“I love that this season offers our audience the opportunity to experience some of the most compelling stories imaginable,” said Artistic Director Curt Columbus. “Starting with our very own local giant, Buddy Cianci, working our way through August Wilson and Charles Dickens, to the words of great contemporary writers like Saracho and Nottage, and ending with the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, this is going to be a season that no one will want to miss.”

Performances of “The Prince of Providence” will run through September and October.
