The Whale Out Skate The P-Bruins, 4-1

Providence Allows Three Power Play Goals in Defeat

Providence, RI The Providence Bruins fell to the Connecticut Whale 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,470 fans. The P-Bruins' lone goal came from Brian McGrattan on a penalty shot.

Despite having a four-minute power play in the opening minutes of the first period, Providence couldn't connect in front of Whale net-minder Dov Grumet-Morris, and Connecticut responded immediately after at 7:39 of the frame when Kris Newbury gave the Whale a 1-0 lead. The play went back and forth until the final six minutes of the period, in which Colby Cohen dropped the mitts with Newbury for his first career fighting major. After Providence controlled much of the offensive play, McGratta was awarded a penalty shot with 54 seconds remaining. The veteran enforcer tied the game when he left Grumet-Morris looking with a beautiful snap shot top-shelf on the glove side.

In a much more physical second period, the P-Bruins' frustration came to surface as both Nathan McIver and Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman dropped the gloves. The Whale took a 2-1 lead early in frame off a goal from Brodie Dupont and continued to pummel Matt Dalton with shots throughout the frame. Connecticut capitalized on two power plays in the last five minutes with goals from Wade Redden and Jeremy Williams to give the Whale a 4-1 lead. The four goals were enough to chase Dalton from the game with 1:31 left in the period as he was relieved by Nolan Schaefer.

Providence and Connecticut were held scoreless in the third period, despite quality scoring opportunities, including two power plays for the P-Bruins. The P-Bruins began to test Grumet-Morris late in the frame, but couldn't connect in front and the Whale went on for the 4-1 win.

Dalton suffered the loss, blocking 12 shots before being relieved by Schaefer, who stopped all eight attempts he faced. Grumet-Morris blocked 21 of 22 Providence shots for the win.
