SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — 2023 has begun and people are starting to work on their New Year’s resolutions.

According to MyFitnessPal, January is the busiest month of the year for gyms, with people eager to make improvements for the new year.

Ocean State Crossfit North in Smithfield is hosting mental health and group workout classes every Wednesday night.

The classes started in July after Jennifer Jasper, co-owner of the gym, met with the founder of Move to Heal, a nonprofit organization focusing on physical and health.

Jasper said the organizations mission aligned with the mission of the gym.

The weekly class started in July, with an average of 30 attendants each week.

Workouts run from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by an hour session of group talk.

The discussion ranges in topics from mental health to sobriety.

“Everybody gets a chance to talk if they would like, they don’t have to if they don’t to, its anonymous,” said Jasper.

Jasper said the gym has had a lot of positive feedback since the classes begun.

“Almost every week it happens that someone will speak and say this meeting is what got them to not drink this week, or what got them to get out of bed this week, or what got them through a really depressed time that they had,” said Jasper.
