Widespread power outages are being reported in Providence.

A National Grid spokesman says a Dyer Street substation lost power just after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The spokesman did not have a firm number of customers without power, but the utility’s website was reporting nearly 4,500 outages.

Security personnel at the federal courthouse, which was one of the buildings that lost power, said there were reports on explosion.

Traffic lights were also out in the downtown area.

National Grid has more than 483,000 customers in Rhode Island.
