Thousands of Rhode Islanders without their Supplemental Social Security Payments
A long line forms at the Department of Human Services in Providence Wednesday, with people wondering where their social security checks are.
"We are aware that about 29,000 individuals have not received payment. When we submitted the file the bank had a different format and as a result of that the benefits didn’t hit the bank," says Melba Depeña Affigne, Director of DHS.
Luis Fred who lives in providence says not receiving his check is creating an issue.
"It’s very upsetting because it unbalances things. It’s like a Swiss cheese, you always trying to patch a hole but you always end up with a hole," he says.
DHS released a statement saying in part…
"Only the State Supplemental SSI payments, which total $39.92 per month per individual, are delayed."
THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES DID LAUNCH ITS NEW SYSTEM LESS THAN A MONTH AGO.
"No I’ve never had a problem with them before(DHS). It’s the system change. That system is crazy no one has their cash," say another woman outside DHS Wednesday.
