Ticket buyers hopeful ahead of $810 million Mega Millions drawing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — After no lucky winners took home last Friday’s Mega Millions, Tuesday’s drawing has now ballooned up to an estimated $810 million prize, making it the third largest jackpot in Mega Millions history.

Tuesday’s Mega Millions number drawing will be at 11 pm, and people have until 9:50 pm to buy their tickets.

If any lucky winners hit Tuesday’s drawing, they will have the option of taking home a $470.1 cash lump sum payment of their winnings, or 30 payments paid out annually.

“Life changing,” said Courtney Smith, who played the Mega Millions in Providence on Tuesday. “You never know what you can do with that kind of money.”

Some hopeful ticket buyers already had their sights set on what they’ll be spending their winnings on.

“I’m gonna pay off my house. It’s almost paid off. And I’m going on a big trip somewhere,” Joseph Catorette said, who also played the Mega Millions in Providence.

Others said they wanted to put their money towards helping their community.

“I’m gonna donate a whole bunch of money to the churches first,” said Smith. “$10,000, $20,000. They all run food banks, you know? There are homeless people out here.”

The $810 million Mega Millions prize has grown from its starting point of $20 million after its last winner. According to Mega Millions, players have a 1 in 303 million chance of striking big on the $2 ticket.

“When it gets up high, [it’s] time to play. Nobody wants to win a little bit of money. We want to win a lot,” Catorette said.

Rhode Islanders looking to enter Mega Millions tickets for a second chance to win Boston Red Sox tickets can do so here. Massachusetts residents can do the same here.
