‘Topgolf Providence’ in Cranston creates controversy
CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Developers in Cranston continue construction on what they hope to call “Topgolf Providence.” But Cranston officials want the name changed.
“The people of Cranston deserve better than this,” said Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins. “It’s been a month they haven’t called me back, and they continue to do business in our city.”
Hopkins said the city of Cranston, Topgolf, and other partners agreed on the name “Topgolf Cranston” for the new facility. But the name “Topgolf Providence” remains in their marketing campaign to attract a greater audience.
“I would want ‘Topgolf Rhode Island’ or ‘Topgolf Cranston.’ That would be my way of negotiating with them,” he said.
Cranston residents that spoke with ABC 6 News said they were unbothered by the name.
One resident asked, “Why would you be upset about it? What are you going to get by being upset? If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. All you can do is enjoy it.”
