Trash Pickup Dispute in West Warwick

A West Warwick resident is threatening legal action against the city after it stopped picking up the garbage at an apartment building she owns.

Someone anonymously called the town and told officials that her property hosts three apartments and a business, violating zoning rules.  The landlord, Lori Riley, says the property is zoned for dual-use and the zoning rules are not actually a problem, while the city says that upon review, the land is zoned only for commercial use, meaning the city isn't responsible for trash pickup there.

Further complicating the issue is the fact that the business that existed there went out of business in 2007 and that space hasn't been filled by a commercial tenant since then.
