Trouble finding a flu shot appointment in Rhode Island? Here’s why

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — With flu season right around the corner, some may be having difficulty booking a vaccine appointment for the next coming days.

Matt’s Local Pharmacy in Middletown said it is administering over 100 flu shots a day — double than what the pharmacy was doing last year.

Matthew Olivier, the owner of the pharmacy, said it’s common for this to happen around this time of year.

“I think this year, especially we’re seeing a huge uptick in people getting their flu vaccine, and I think that’s because we’re seeing things in the news like RSV — and I think we’re seeing a higher rate of flu,” Olivier said.

Olivier said his pharmacy is seeing a slight shortage for flu doses 65 and older but expects that to subside by the end of this week. But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are no current shortages of vaccines.

The vaccine for 65 and older is a more concentrated dose, recommended by the CDC.

“Overall, you shouldn’t have trouble finding vaccines, it just might take a little bit of time to get that appointment you’re looking for,” Olivier said.
