Belichick Announces He Won’t Be Accepting Presidential Medal of Freedom

FOXBORO, M.A. (WLNE) — In his final days as Commander in Chief, President Donald Trump planned to honor Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Monday evening, NFL insider Adam Shefter shared a statement from Belichick, stating he will not go to the White House or “move forward with the award.”

Belichick stated that he was flattered considering what the honor represents and his admiration for prior recipients.

In his statement, Belichick said, “The tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award. Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for out nation’s values. freedom and democracy.”

Belichick continued, “One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality, and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions.  Continuing those efforts while remaining true to the people, team and country I love outweigh the benefits of any individual award.”

The medal is the highest honor an American civilian can receive, but one Massachusetts lawmaker says Belichick should not accept the award.

“I would refuse it if I were Bill Belichick,” said Rep. Jim McGovern, who represents Massachusetts’ Second Congressional District.

“This president has made a mockery of the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” McGovern continued, “Bill Belichick should do the right thing and say ‘no thanks.’”

There is no exact reason has been given as to why Belichick is being awarded the medal.

President Trump is set to award the medal on Thursday, a little over one week after rioters stormed the capitol, resulting in 5 deaths and dozens of arrests.

Last week, President Trump honored Hall of Fame Golfers Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player with Presidential Medals of Freedom, just one day after the riot.

“This president is not fit for office,” McGovern said, “So anything he would bestow on anybody, to me, is meaningless and to accept it is disgraceful.”

Meanwhile in Washington, House Democrats are pushing for the President’s impeachment, just 9 days before he is set to leave office.
