CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Cranston Finance Committee is scheduled to review the status of two school employee contracts on Monday.

The contracts scheduled for hearing are the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Cranston Teachers’ Alliance Local 1704, ATF and the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Cranston Teachers’ Alliance, Local 1704, AFT Paraprofessionals Unit.

Mayor Ken Hopkins requested the city review the contacts after announcing layoffs in the city. A total of 21 Cranston city positions have been eliminated as part of a cost-cutting initiative.

“The contracts are just out of line with today’s economic climate and we cannot just keep piling raises on top of raises,” said Hopkins.

One of the mayor’s concerns is the teachers’ three year dals with annual increases for senior teachers, citing a bill of over $16 million.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m.
