PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Providence Police are investigating a double shooting that left two men in the hospital Wednesday night.

Police responded to the area of Touro Street and Lombardi Street around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of shots fired. Officers on scene located several bullet casings in the rear of 93 Touro Street.

Witnesses on scene told Police that they were gathered with friends in the rear of 93 Touro Street when a male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a mask came toward them and began shooting into the backyard.

Two men, identified as Shawn Chalmers, 26, and Jean Sajous, 27, were struck by bullets fired by the male suspect.

Witnesses told Police the suspect ran to a silver van which fled down Lombardi Street toward Commodore Street, at which point they began attending to Chalmers’ and Sajous’ injuries, transporting them to the hospital.

Police said one witness attempted to pursue the silver van seen on Lombardi Street, finding it crashed on Chatham street.

Witnesses said multiple subjects then fled from the silver van. While Police were conducting an accident report, one subject returned to the scene to retrieve his cell phone from the van. He was detained and transported to Central Station.
