Two men at the center of a massive illegal cigarette trafficking scheme have pleaded guilty today in federal court.

Wissam Khalil, 41, of Central Falls and his brother Bassam Khalil, 49, formerly of Pawtucket, admitted Thursday that they brought more than 6 million cigarettes into Rhode Island from Virginia and sold them without proper state tax stamps.

The scheme cheated the state out of nearly $1.1 million of tax revenue.

Both men are detained in federal custody pending sentencing on September 25, 2014.
