UPDATE: Fatal motor vehicle accident involving a bicyclist in Middletown late Friday night

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) – On Friday, May 22, at approximately 11:20 p.m., the Middletown Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a bicycle.

Crews were responded to the area of West Main Road at the entrance to Harbor Village.

Upon arrival, the bicyclist, Elias Velasquez Chavez a 40-year-old male from Newport had succumb to his injuries. The vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene.

Nearby surveillance video shows a dark colored Dodge Charger or Dodge Challenger travelling southbound at a high rate of speed on West Main Road at the time of accident.

The footage also shows a dark colored sedan travelling behind the Dodge.

The vehicle travels through the Two-Mile intersection at approximately 11:16 p.m.

Middletown Police are asking anyone that may have information about the accident, or were in that area at that time to contact the detective division at 401-846-1144 or the anonymous tip line at 401-842-6516.

Anyone with surveillance video that shows any portion of West Main Road or the intersection East Main Road and Valley Road are also asked to contact the police

The accident remains under investigation and updates will be provided as they become available.
