UPDATE: Gold’s Gym in East Greenwich ordered to reopen under special conditions

UPDATE: At a hearing Wednesday morning, a Judge has ordered to reopen Gold’s Gym with mandatory bi-weekly status reports on how the selling of the company is going. The gym will not be required to pay rent through January and the receiver will pay payroll of all of its employees, including $28,000 owed to them. The receiver is confident they’ll either stay open under current ownership or find another buyer before the deadline of January 31.

EAST GREENWICH – Gold’s Gym in East Greenwich abruptly closed its doors Tuesday night, leaving its staff and members scratching their heads.

The owners filed for receivership earlier this month. On Tuesday, A Kent County Superior Court judge ordered the gym closed at 11pm, and said that all assets will be liquidated.

Members that ABC6 spoke with were shocked to learn it would be their last workout there.

"Its pretty inconvenient.  I live ten minutes from here and I would have liked to have known beforehand,” said one member, who found out only when an ABC6 reporter asked for his reaction.

"There are other members in there that have been here for ten years. My friends been here for 2 and a half and they’re very, very upset,” said Jareth Carlson, a Warwick resident who frequented the gym one to two times per day.

Another member said she had the same thing happen to her at Gold’s Gym in North Providence, which also closed due to financial issues. "That’s crazy because nobody knows. They’re not telling anybody."  She added that last time she never received a membership refund.

An employee told ABC6 news they too were unaware of the gym closing, until they showed up for work Tuesday.

A manager we spoke with wouldn’t comment on the situation, but id say they may release a statement later on.  No word on membership refunds.
