URI cancels in-person commencement ceremony

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- The University of Rhode Island has canceled its in-person commencement ceremonies, according to a statement the school issued today.

“Given the continuing guidance about social distancing and group gatherings, it is essential that the health and well being of our graduates and their families remain our highest priority,” the statement read.

The graduation exercises and related events were scheduled for May 16 and 17.

The university is conducting a poll of expected graduates for ideas on an alternative commencement celebration.
