URI Football Putting Winless Season Behind Them

By Matt Blanchette

The Rhode Island football season starts on Thursday night with a game at Fordham as the Rams look to erase memories of a disastorous 2012.

Rhody was winless in 11 tries last year.

Injuries played a major role in the team's struggles but head coach Joe Trainer says his team needs to improve fundamentally in all areas if they expect to win this year.

Senior and West Warwick native Bob Bentson returns as the starting quarterback and the Rams say they are using last season as motivation as they start this one.

“I just think the itch of some players to win. Everyone who went through that doesn't want to be there again,” Bentson said.  “That was a tough time for all of us. It was probably the toughest of our football careers, you now you are denied eleven times. To not feel like that again is what is driving them.”

Said Trainer: “I think it's not behind you until it is officially behind you with the season that is at hand right now. I think getting underway certainly by Thursday night at 10 o'clock, that will be a distant memory and we are off and running in 2013.”
