URI Pitcher Ty Sterner Drafted by the Reds in the 23rd Round

URI news release…

KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island left handed pitcher Ty Sterner was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 23rd round of the 2014 MLB Draft. The Worcester, Mass. native was the 695th overall pick, becoming URI’s 13th player drafted since 2003.

“It goes without saying that having the opportunity to play at the next level is a dream come true,” Sterner said.

However, despite becoming head coach Jim Foster’s ninth draft pick, Sterner never actually heard the words that every ballplayer grows up hoping to hear.

“I had been following the draft with my family for the past three days. It was getting frustrating not hearing my name, so I went outside with my mom for a bit. I just needed a break. Then my dad ran out and was like ‘Ty you got drafted!’ I didn’t even realize what he was saying at first but then I got the phone call and everything sort of fell into place.”

Sterner – who moved to the weekend rotation after spending his first two years at URI in the bullpen – allowed three or fewer earned runs in seven of his 10 starts this season. He recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in URI’s final game of the season against Richmond and faced just five over the minimum through 7.2 innings against VCU.

In each of his three seasons at Rhode Island, Sterner recorded more strikeouts than hits allowed, averaging 7.9 K’s per nine innings pitched.

“It definitely hasn’t set in yet,” Sterner added. “Eventually it will, but for now its just kind of surreal.”

The deadline for 2013 draft picks to sign is July 18, 2014.
