KINGSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — A 18-year-old URI student was seriously hurt after being hit by a sport utility vehicle while skateboarding early Thursday evening.

Spokesperson for the University of Rhode Island David Lavallee told ABC6 News Thursday night that Henry Karshis, of Foxboro M.A., was hit on West Alumni Avenue, west of Butterfield Road on the Kingston Campus around 5:30 p.m.

The vehicle that hit Karshis was being operated by 19-year-old Stephano Gilnas, of Montvale, N.J.

The teen skateboarder sustained serious injuries and was transported via Life Flight helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital.

“In the aftermath of the accident, staff from the University’s Division of Student Affairs met with students who were in the area at the time of the accident, offering them information on University support resources. In addition, a member of URI’s Counseling Services went to the hospital, and a counselor also met with the driver of the vehicle on campus,” said Lavallee.

Both Karshis and Gilnas are URI students.

Karshis’ condition is unknown at this time.
