URI student suspended for having gun in residence hall

A University of Rhode Island student has been suspended and barred from the campus after threatening to hurt himself with a gun in a residence hall.

The student’s friends were able to take the gun away from him and remove it from the scene. After consenting so a search of his room, campus police later located and secured the 9-mm handgun, as well as two additional magazines.

In a statement, URI says the student did not threaten anyone and there were no injuries.

The student has been suspended from the university and barred from the campus pending the student conduct investigation.
