Victim identified in deadly Sunday car crash on Putnam Pike in Smithfield

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) – A man in his late-60’s died after a three-car crash in Smithfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Smithfield Police Department said they responded to a car accident on Putnam Pike around 1:30 p.m.

Smithfield Police say Bruce Ferreira, 65, of Pascoag, was driving a decommissioned, five-ton military vehicle.

Ferreira then struck the rear of another westbound car driven by Rachel Ferreira, 34, of Woodstock, Connecticut.

Smithfield Police say that they have no information indicating that the two drivers are related.

Mr. Ferreira’s vehicle then entered the oncoming travel lane striking another car going eastbound, according to police.

The driver of the car going eastbound, John McKenzie, 68, of Watertown, Massachusetts, died as a result from his injuries from the crash.

McKenzie had a passenger in his car who is now identified as Carol Riggenbach, 70, also of Watertown, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
