Video shows apparent fight between police in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — A fight between what appears to be police and some people trying to board a trolley in Newport was caught on camera over the weekend.

The video shared with ABC 6 News shows officers punching and wrestling two men to the ground.

Newport Police Lt. April Amaral said two men, who are in their 20s, were arrested. Their names were not immediately released.

The incident happened early Sunday morning on Thames Street.

Newport police told ABC 6 News the incident stemmed from two arrests made that night and that Chief Gary Silva was aware of the video and is investigating.

Police didn’t provide any further details when asked if the officers involved have been identified or will face conduct. They said they will be conducting a thorough investigation prior to taking any actions.

Thomas Shelvin, the communications officer for the Newport city manager, told ABC 6 that the city and the police department are both investigating the incident.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority told ABC 6 that the trolley does not belong to them.

Christopher Millea, the attorney for one of the men arrested, said his client is facing charges, including obstruction, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. He said his client is due in court on July 6.
