Visually impaired woman from Warwick and her dog graduate from university

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — A visually impaired woman from Warwick and her guide dog graduated together from Southern New Hampshire University over the weekend.

Heather Schey, 48, graduated Saturday with her Bachelor of Arts in human services with the faithful companionship of her dog by her side.

Her 7-year-old dog, Asher, wore a cap and gown of his own. His cap read,  “I gave her all the answers.”

Southern New Hampshire University shares this is photo of Heather Schey and her dog Asher in their cap and gown after graduation, Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022.

This was a long journey for Schey, who had started and stopped her path to getting her degree over the years due to accessibility accommodations.

The university’s Associate Vice President Lauren Keane said Schey’s degree was 30 years in the making.

Schey is currently working at Ocean State Center for Independent Living in Warwick, where she helps other people in need of assistance.
