PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The next Volvo Ocean Race, offshore sailing’s most prestigious event, will again make its only North American stopover in Newport, Rhode Island.

Officials from the state and the round-the-world race made the announcement Friday.

The stopover will be held in 2018, before the vessels cross the Atlantic to Europe. Newport is the seventh port to be named for the 2017-to-2018 competition.

Newport hosted the only North American stopover earlier this year. It drew an estimated 130,000 fans during the 13-day event. A race official said at the time it attracted five times the visitors who attended the race in Miami in 2012.

The public sailing center Sail Newport estimates the total economic impact on the state was more than $47 million.

Additional details will be announced next year.
