WAREHAM, Mass. (WLNE) – Two Wareham police officers are being commended by the department for rescuing a person who was stuck neck deep in water on Sunday.

On Sunday, Wareham police officers James White and Jon Verheagen responded to a beach location for a report of a person distressed in the water.

When the officers arrived, they saw the victim was neck deep in the water.  Both officers entered the water in their uniforms, and assisted the person back to land.

The individual was transported to Tobey Hospital for treatment. Members of the Wareham Department of Natural Resources responded with a boat to aid the incident.

Wareham Police Chief, John Walcek, said the officers were uninjured but ruined their uniforms.

Chief Walcek said, “The officers put their own safety aside to assist someone who needed help. They did a great job, and I am very proud of them.”
