Warren looks to ban smoking recreational marijuana in public ahead of legalization in state

WARREN, R.I. (WLNE) — With the legalization of recreational marijuana going into effect in Rhode Island soon, the town of Warren is looking to ban smoking pot in public streets.

Gov. Dan McKee signed a bill two months ago making the state the 19th in the country to legalize cannabis.

Under the bill, possession and home-growing of pot will be legal for people 21 over in the state and will allow for recreational sales to start at the beginning of December.

The Warren Town Council is working to develop the measure that would prohibit anyone from smoking or vaping marijuana in any public spots, including a public way.

The ordinance is being revised to clarify what constitutes as a public place. It will be introduced at a Town Council meeting on Aug. 9.
