Warren man held without bail after attacking his mother with hammer

WARREN, R.I. (WLNE) — A Warren woman remains in the hospital after police say her son beat her in the face with a hammer.

That man, 34-year-old Kevin Mendes from Warren, is now being held without bail at the ACI, charged with domestic assault with a deadly weapon with intent to commit murder.

A judge ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Warren police say the incident occurred Monday at a home on Birch Swamp Road.

A tenant who lives in the downstairs portion of the home heard the commotion and was able to stop Mendes before calling police.

Warren police say Mendes is no stranger to them.

“We did have contact with him back in February,” Chief Roy Borges told ABC 6.

“He tried to assault [an] officer with a machete,” Borges explained.

Mendes was out on bail for the February incident when Monday’s attack occurred.

His 53-year-old mother remains in the hospital with severe fractures to her face and skull.
