WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – School sports in Warwick are back on just in time for the start of the school year.

The Warwick City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a $4 million funding plan for athletics programs and other after-school activities for the upcoming year.

To help make up that $4 million, City Council President Steve Merolla told ABC6 the money is coming from the city’s rainy day fund, the legal department, road paving and overtime for the fire department.

Warwick Mayor Joseph Solomon is calling it a win for everyone.

“We’ve been working very hard and diligently and this is the end result,” said Solomon. “The end result is communication, cooperation and compromise. When you put the 3 of those together, it benefits the community overall.”

Aside from sports, the City Council has also agreed to fund, among other things, band programs, after-school activities, and teacher’s assistants.
