Warwick Murder Suspect Held Without Bail

Friends and family packed a courtroom today to see the man accused of gunning down their loved one.

The murder happened on Nausauket Road early Sunday morning, killing Carl Cunningham, 23, of Warwick.

“This is the kind of stuff you see on television, not in your living room,” Jessica Cunningham, the victim's cousin, said. “You don't walk into your house and see pictures of your cousin up in your uncle's house because he's not there.”

The man accused of pulling the trigger is Tony Gonzalez, 25, of Providence. He was arraigned in court Monday morning on murder and weapons charges. Four rows of Cunningham's friends and family watched on, shouting expletives as Gonzalez passed by them.

“I'm angry. I'm so angry,” Carl Cunningham Sr., the victim's father, said. “I could barely even be here, but I know Carl wants me here, so I'm going to be here.”

What's even tougher for the victim's family is knowing that the bullets may not have been meant for him. Officers believe Gonzalez showed up to his ex-girlfriend's home looking for her current boyfriend. The family says the boyfriend was inside, but it was Carl Cunningham who opened the door, and then shots were fired.

Gonzalez is being held without bail. He will appear in Superior Court, where he is expected to enter a plea, on January 30.
