Warwick officer credited for mowing elderly resident’s overgrown lawn

“It got the community of Warwick to see what their police department’s all about,” Caradimos explained. “There’s officers every day that do this kind of thing, and it’s not recognized. We don’t want the recognition.”

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE)- A video of a Warwick police officer caught on camera doing a good deed went viral on social media this past week.

While on his daily patrol through the King Street neighborhood, officer Matthew Caradimos knew something was wrong about a home with severely over-grown grass.

He decided to conduct a wellness check on the resident.

“I ended up going to knock on the door and I didn’t get a response- which was kind of concerning at first,” officer Caradimos told ABC6 News.

After speaking with a neighbor, Caradimos learned the elderly homeowner was struggling to find someone to mow her lawn. While thinking of how he was going to help the homeowner out, Caradimos saw a man riding a moped speed through a stop sign at a nearby intersection.

After he waved down the man and told him what he had done, he thought to ask the man if he had a lawnmower.

The man told him he had two, and asked if he wanted one. Caradimos explained the lawnmower was not for him, but the neighbor with the overgrown grass.

Living nearby and motivated, the man came back a few minutes later with a fully-gassed mower.

That’s when officer Caradimos went to work.

He told ABC6 News he had no idea he was being recorded, until the video spread like wildfire on social media.

Caradimos said he wasn’t looking for any recognition, but appreciated the kind words people online shared.

“It got the community of Warwick to see what their police department’s all about,” Caradimos explained. “There’s officers every day that do this kind of thing, and it’s not recognized. We don’t want the recognition.”

Officer Caradimos told ABC6 from now on, the elderly resident will now have someone locally to cut her grass every week.
