WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – The adoptive mother of a disabled 9-year-old girl found dead January in their Warwick home is now facing manslaughter charges.

A Grand Jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging 55-year-old Michele Rothgeb  with manslaughter in connection with the death of 9-year-old Zah-Nae, who died in Rothgeb’s care on January 3.

Rothgeb is also being charged with cruelty or neglect of a child.

An investigation after the death revealed that eight other children were living in squalid conditions in Rothgeb’s Warwick home.

Rothgeb said she was sick, so she left her 15-year-old son in charge of Zah-Nae. The girl, who had cerebral palsy, was later found unresponsive in the empty tub.

The children have since been taken into DCYF care.

Rothgeb will be arraigned June 28 in Kent County Superior Court.
