RIVERSIDE, R.I. (WLNE)– A Washington County resident has been charged with two counts of unnecessary animal cruelty, according to a statement from the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Rhode Island state troopers from the Hope Valley barracks arrested 56-year-old  Warren Shaw after complaints were received in November regarding the treatment of horses he owned, according to a statement the group released Tuesday.

An investigation determined that two horses were wearing a halter “that had completely embedded itself into the horse’s head,”, according to the statement.

The two  horses were seized and given veterinary care, the RISPCA said.

Shaw is scheduled to for arraignment in Fourth District Court on March 17.
