PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Attorney General Peter Neronha said a West Warwick man was found guilty of multiple counts of first-degree child molestation.

Neronha said Nelson Carreiro, 42, was found guilty after a three day trial on March 8.

During the trial, the state proved beyond reasonable doubt that between 2006 and 2008, Carreiro sexually assaulted a female victim under the age of 14.

The victim reported the molestation after she moved out of state and the case was then forwarded to Rhode Island State Police for investigation.

“No result in a courtroom can und the traumatic harm the defendant caused the little girl he sexually assaulted here,” Neronha said.

“I commend this child for her courage in coming forward, and ultimately doing an extraordinarily brave thing: confronting her accuser and ensuring that he will no longer be able to harm others,” Neronha concluded.

Carreiro is being held without bail at the ACI pending a sentence hearing scheduled for April this year.
