Westerly Drowning Victim Identified
WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) – Westerly police have identified a man who died after getting into trouble with the undertow in the waters off Misquamicut Beach earlier this week.
Chief Edward A. Mello on Wednesday says 32-year-old Darrell Carter of North Providence was the man who died on Monday.
He says Carter is presumed to have drowned, but the medical examiner's office is still working on the cause of death.
Carter was swimming behind Paddy's Restaurant when witnesses say he shouted to a friend that he was having trouble because of an undertow.
Bystanders pulled him from the water unconscious, and he was pronounced dead at Westerly Hospital.
