WESTPORT, Mass. (WLNE) – A local program that teaches high school students about fire-fighting is getting attention on the national stage.

The Westport Fire Explorer Post has been named the national junior firefighter program of the year.

Students get hands on experience to maybe someday become firefighters— everything from suiting up, to testing out equipment.

The students say the skills they’re learning are definitely helping them reach their goals.

“It’s helped me experience hands on experience on what firefighters do,” said Dylan Soares, a senior at Westport High School. “I really didn’t know all that they do.”

It’s just great,” said Ryan Silvia, a junior at Diman Regional High School. “You can find what you want to really do here and find something that you really want to do in life.”

Anyone interested in joining must apply to the program.
