Westport police asking for assistance in locating witnesses to a hit and run

WESTPORT, MASS (WLNE) – Police are looking for witnesses to a hit and run that left a Fall River woman in critical condition.
Westport police received a 911 call around 8:15 pm Tuesday evening to a report of a crash in the area of 288 Old Bedford Road.
The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Stephanie Tipp, who was face down in the breakdown lane suffering from serious injuries. She was rushed to Rhode Island hospital where she remains in critical condition.
Police say a preliminary investigation revealed the victim was walking alone the side of the roadway when she was struck by a sedan-style vehicle.
The male operator of the of the vehicle exited the car and apparently told a witness he was sorry and did not mean to hit her, police say.
The department says the witness urged the driver to stay on scene while they were providing aid to the victim. That’s when the driver sped off in an east direction on Old Bedford Road.
Police also say another witness attempted to follow the suspect’s vehicle., which, according to the witness, was traveling at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles by swerving into the opposite travel lane.
The vehicles lat known location was at the corner of Old Fall River Road and Faunce Corner road in Dartmouth around 8:30pm. The vehicle may have sustained minor front end damage.
Police are urging anybody who may have information about the victim or the incident, to contact the department. They may also text anonymous tips by texting the word “BRISTOL” to 274637 or CRIMES.
