Westport Police investigating after school committee meeting was ‘Zoombombed’

WESTPORT, Mass. (WLNE) – Westport Police are investigating after a person made an obscene gesture during a school committee meeting on Zoom that included children and families Wednesday night.

Superintendent of Schools Gary Reese and Police Chief Keith A. Pelletier said an investigation was opened after an individual was recognized to speak around 6:40 p.m., and started making sexually graphic gestures and comments directed at a school committee member once their camera was turned on.

That person was immediately removed from the meeting and Westport Police and the FBI were notified.

The Zoom meeting included over 200 participants including students, parents, school officials and elected officials.

Superintendent Reese said proper protocols were followed for hosting a Zoom meeting but the district’s technology staff will be reviewing and reconsidering whether Zoom can safely host future school committee meetings.

The district will be offering counseling and assistance to any meeting attendee.
