Five new medical marijuana dispensaries coming to RI; winners randomly selected in lottery drawing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Five winners in Rhode Island’s medical marijuana license drawing were selected on Friday.

The lottery was held at the Department of Business Regulation.

“It was interesting…it was like we were in Vegas, not the State House. So, it was really wild,” said winner of Zone 4 Edward Dow.
A blindfolded former FBI agent picked the winning numbers from a Twin River tumbler. The random lottery picked from different zones in an effort to disperse medical cannabis centers throughout Rhode Island.

The winners are as follows:

  • Zone One: RMI Compassion Center Inc. was selected
  • Zone Two: Pinnacle Compassion Center Inc.
  • Zone Three: Green Wave CC, Inc.
  • Zone Four: Solar Therapeutics Rhode Island, Inc.
  • Zone Five: Plant Based Compassionate Care Inc.

The lottery consisted of five rounds, one for each zone.

The winning five will join the three already existing Compassion Centers in Providence, Warwick, and Portsmouth.

“It’s exciting to see the conclusion of it, one way or another,” said Edward Dow. “We’re really happy with the results.”

Some business owners declared winners, while others didn’t get the results they hoped for.

“Just to have the opportunity to get a one in ten shot. Better odds than you’ll see in any other lottery, you know?” said Jason Calderon of Compassion by Bonzai.

Before each round, numbers were drawn and assigned to every company in the zone.
