TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) – A Taunton woman has been charged with Assault and Battery on a police officer that was assisting with a Department of Children and Families investigation into her home.

Melissa Jean Hope, 34, of Taunton was placed under arrest Sunday after she allegedly assaulted a Police Officer.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Taunton Police officers were dispatched to an apartment building on East Water Avenue to assist with a probe being carried out by the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF).

The probe in question was intended to investigate an anonymous tip concerning child abuse against three children living at the residence. The tip included a number of concerns that, according to court documents, involved alleged “sexual assault and the keeping of children in cages.”

Two individuals, Melissa Hope and a male, were at the address when officers arrived. When both Melissa and the male refused to allow the officers to enter the apartment, the officers received authorization to force entry.

While officers were investigating the residence, Melissa Hope allegedly assaulted one of the officers at the scene. Melissa Hope was subsequently arrested and taken to the Taunton Police Department.

Hope was arraigned Monday morning, charged with Assault and Battery on a police officer, and released on personal recognizance.

The three children at the residence were taken into DCF custody as a result of the living conditions of the apartment.

Hope is scheduled to appear in court again on November 15.

An investigation is ongoing. It is unknown at this time if the children were found in cages.
