PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – A 21-year-old woman has been charged in the death of her newborn son.

Ginalys Velazquez Camara was charged with first-degree murder after Providence Police responded to her apartment on Ring Street on March 30, and found her infant son dead.

Major David Lapatin said in a press conference Thursday, that the child died from neglect.

“If you neglect the child to the point where the child passes away, it’s murder,” said Lapatin.

Police and the Attorney General’s Office investigated for several weeks and found that Camara had given birth around March 23 at an apartment on Union Avenue.

“The young woman then took the child to an apartment on Ring Street, again, neglecting the care of the child, and eventually the child passed away.”

They think the child was delivered with no medical professionals present and was never taken to a hospital.

The baby was found dead approximately seven days after its birth.

Police said they’ve responded to the Ring Street home before for welfare checks of Camara. Lapatin said Camara lived there with family.

Camara was arraigned and held without bail.
