Woman dies after being struck by SUV in Cranston

Cranston police said a pedestrian has died after being hit by an SUV on Tuesday night.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Cranston police said a pedestrian has died after being hit by an SUV on Tuesday night.

According to Major Todd Patalano, the accident happened in the southbound lanes of Reservoir Avenue.

Patalano told ABC6 News that “everyone is cooperating along with a witness.”

Patalano said the victim was a woman, who has not yet been identified.

The victim died at Rhode Island Hospital.

Witnesses told ABC 6 she had been walking her dog. They said a driver who saw what happened grabbed the dog and brought it into a nearby liquor store to wait for animal control. It suffered minor injuries, according to police.

“The nice thing was that woman, that she took so much care of that dog. I just wish it was a better outcome,” said Manager at Heritage Liquors Frederick Lyons.

Those who frequent the area told ABC 6 it’s a dangerous road at night because it’s not well lit, and does not have many cross walks in the vicinity.

“I’d like to see something done because it’s a shame,” said Lyons. “I feel bad for the woman and her  family. It’s just a tragedy.”

This is breaking news and more information will be updated when it is provided.
