Woman Killed in Cranston Identified; Accident Remains a Mystery

by Mark Curtis

Cranston police were back on the scene of where a woman's body was found behind the Wal-Mart on Plainfield Pike, Monday. They were taking measurements and gathering more clues, just one day after a car drove through a fence and rolled over into a retention pond. The driver died. People in the adjoining neighborhood say they heard and saw nothing, and remain as baffled as police.

Debbie Ragosta, a nearby Cranston resident said, “I didn't hear anything. I had no idea it even happened, until I seen it on TV.”

The accident happened on a service drive that truckers use to bring in their goods. It is not a public street.

Mark Curtis. from ABC6 News said, “One of the more curious things about this fatal accident is the lack of any evidence that shows this car even tried to stop before going through that fence and then down into the retaining pond. If you look down at the pavement there are some oil stains, but there aren't any skid marks or any other indications that this car tried to stop  before making impact here.”

There is one lone gash in the asphalt curb, near where the fence was breached. That's it.  Neighbors were left to speculate:

Dick Hanson, a nearby Cranston resident said, “There's a lot of unanswered questions. Could the person that was driving had fallen asleep, or had a seizure, or what? Who knows?”

The woman who died is identified as Colleen Hopkins. The exact cause of death is still being investigated.
