Woman thrown from car, killed in Massachusetts highway crash

LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WLNE) — Massachusetts State Police said a woman was thrown from a car and killed after a crash on Interstate-91 Sunday night.

According to authorities, just before 3 a.m., state troopers were called to Mile Marker 0.2 in Longmeadow and found several cars with varying damage.

Investigators said a Volkswagen Rabbit was driving northbound on I-91 when it rear-ended a Dodge pickup truck.

Officials said the impact caused a woman, identified as being about 20-years-old, in the Volkswagen to be thrown into the roadway.

The Dodge pickup truck came to a stop against a guard rail, but the woman was struck by multiple passing vehicles that were traveling northbound, officials said.

Troopers said several other cars also became involved in the accident after hitting debris in the road.

Police said the driver of the Volkswagen, a 29-year-old man from Springfield, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Baystate Medical Center.

Four occupants in the Dodge pickup truck were also taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

Police said they were able to open all lanes of traffic at 9:30 a.m. after investigating and clean-up was completed.

The identity of the dead woman was not immediately available.

The crash remains under investigation by state police and no further information was immediately released.
