Women & Infants Hospital breaks ground on new building

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Women & Infants Hospital says its building a new facility that’s aimed at eliminating disparities of care and “[elevating] every mother’s birthing experience.”
The Brown University Labor and Delivery Center at Women & Infants Hospital will be completed by December of next year.

Raina Smith, a spokeswoman for Care New England, said Dimeo Construction Company has been picked to build the space. The three-story building will have 20 labor and delivery rooms, nurses’ stations, a staff lounge, a locker room, and management offices.

When the project is finished, Smith says the new unit will enhance birthing options, enlarge delivery room, and provide an equitable, state-of-the-art environment where families can deliver their babies.
“To care for future generations, it is imperative that we upgrade our facilities, so those who trust us to provide them with expert care receive the medically advanced environment they’ve come to expect and deserve from Women & Infants Hospital,” Shannon Sullivan, president and COO of Women & Infants Hospital, said in part.

Aside from the new building, Smith says a new robust Women’s Health Research Institute will also be created, which will tackle important projects, including health inequity research.
