Woonsocket man accused of shooting 25-year-old with rifle

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Woonsocket police said Friday they arrested a man accused of shooting a 25-year-old with a rifle.

The shooting happened on Brook Street just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police said Tyrek Switzer, 22, shot the 25-year-old in the lower left abdomen after an argument.

Switzer left his Brook Street apartment before officers arrived, Chief Thomas Oates said. After phone negotiations, he agreed to turn himself in to police.

Oates said that on his way to the Woonsocket Police Department, he was stopped and arrested without incident.

Switzer was charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon, weapons other than firearms prohibited and firing in a compact area.

The victim went to Landmark Medical Center before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital.
