The 2-year-old was found safe Monday afternoon. The search continues for the man who stole the car.

WOONSOCKET, RI (WLNE) – Woonsocket police continue to search for a man who stole a car Monday with a child in the backseat.

Police said the man is bald and in his 30s. The car was stolen outside of Mason Grocery on Elm Street Monday afternoon. The car was left running by a woman who quickly ran into the store. When she came out, her car and her child were gone.

“My heart goes in my throat I feel bad for this girl. I would’ve lost like she did. She was losing her mind and I felt bad and wanted to hug her. I didn’t know what else to do,” a neighbor told ABC6.

The two-year-old was found safe moments after the theft but the search remains for the thief as of Tuesday morning.

Police found the var abandoned shortly after about one block away on Sweet Avenue with the 2-year-old unharmed, in the backseat.

“We’re looking for more video to help identify the suspect,” Woonsocket Deputy Chief of Police Michael Lemoine said Tuesday.

The man was last seen walking away from the car heading towards Cass Avenue.

ABC6 also spoke with Derek Alger, a store employee who wasn’t working at the time of the incident but was in the neighborhood when it happened.

“I was walking down the street and I saw a bunch of cops and I didn’t know what was going on. Then my reaction was oh my god someone hijacked a car with a kid in it, I can’t believe someone would do something like that.”

Police are continuing to search for more video to identify the suspect at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Woonsocket Police Department at (401)-766-1212.
